10 Things to Look for When Choosing a Wedding Venue in Central Ohio

Choosing your wedding venue is one of the first big decisions you'll make after getting engaged, and it can feel like a lot.

You start scrolling through photos, saving places you love, comparing prices, and trying to picture your wedding in each space. Before long, all those beautiful venues can start to run together.

But beautiful photos only tell part of the story.

Your venue affects almost everything that comes after it. How many people you can comfortably celebrate with. What your budget actually buys. The vendors who help bring your vision to life. How your guests experience the day. What happens when Ohio weather has other plans. And who will be in your corner through all of it.

Most importantly, your venue has a huge impact on how your wedding day actually feels.

Here's something else I think is important to say right from the beginning: Barn 1800 may not be the perfect wedding venue for every couple.

That's what makes finding the one that feels perfect for you so special.

Whether you choose to celebrate with us or somewhere else, knowing what matters to you and knowing what questions to ask will help you recognize it when you find it.

So before you fall completely in love with a beautiful view, here are 10 things I think every couple should consider when choosing a wedding venue in Central Ohio.

1. Picture the Wedding You Actually Want

It's surprisingly easy to walk into a gorgeous venue and immediately start picturing yourself getting married there.

That's part of the fun!

But somewhere between the gorgeous chandeliers and the view you already know will look amazing in photos, stop and think about the wedding the two of you actually want.

Do you picture your ceremony outside?

Do you want your ceremony and reception in the same place?

Do you want a big dance floor?

Do you want 250 people around you or something intimate with 75?

Do you want formal and elegant? Relaxed and rustic?

Do you already have a caterer, photographer, or DJ you love?

There isn't one perfect kind of wedding venue. There's a venue that fits your people, your priorities, and your day.

Before you start touring, think about the handful of things that matter most to both of you.

When all the pretty spaces start running together, those priorities become your compass.

2. Start With Your Guest List, Not the Venue

You definitely don't need a final headcount before you start touring venues, but having a general idea is important.

And don't just ask: "How many people can you hold?" Ask what that number actually looks like.

Can the venue comfortably accommodate your guests with tables, chairs, a dance floor, DJ or band, catering setup, and everything else you picture being part of your reception?

A maximum capacity number doesn't necessarily tell you how the space functions at that capacity.

That's why capacity based on your specific setup is one of the questions The Knot recommends asking during a venue tour. A room set for 150 guests with a dance floor, DJ, and catering space can feel very different from that same room arranged for maximum seating.

You don't need an exact RSVP count before you start touring, but having a general idea of your guest list will help the venue show you what your celebration could actually look and feel like in the space.

Because you're not really looking for a venue that can fit your people. You're looking for one where your people can celebrate.

3. Know What's Actually Included in the Price

This one is huge.

Two venues can quote the exact same rental price and offer two completely different experiences.

Does the price include tables? Chairs? Linens? Setup? Teardown? Cleaning? Ceremony space? Getting-ready suites? Rehearsal time? Parking? Transportation?

Are there vendor requirements? Catering fees? Service fees? Ceremony setup fees? Insurance requirements?

Zola recommends comparing venues “apples to apples” for exactly this reason. The starting price doesn't always tell you the entire cost of hosting your wedding there.

Here's what really matters:

Don't fall for the first price. Fall for what's included in it.

Ask for a clear picture of what's included and what you'll be responsible for separately.

Because the goal isn't necessarily to find the lowest price. It's to understand what you're getting for the money you're spending and choose the experience that's worth it to you.

4. Picture Your Wedding, Rain or Shine

Because...Ohio. 😂

You can plan the flowers, the music, the seating chart, and the exact minute you're walking down the aisle.

But anyone who's lived in Ohio for more than five minutes knows Mother Nature likes to keep us guessing.

If you're dreaming about an outdoor ceremony, don't stop at asking whether there's an indoor option. Go look at it.

Could you genuinely picture saying "I do" there too?

Ask what happens if the forecast changes. How does the venue transition from an outdoor ceremony to an indoor one? When does that decision need to be made? Will your guests still be comfortable? Does changing locations affect setup or cost?

And weather planning isn't only about rain.

A 90-degree July afternoon or a surprisingly chilly October evening can change the experience just as quickly. Climate-controlled spaces and comfortable places for your guests to gather can matter a whole lot more on your wedding day than they did when you toured on a perfect 72-degree afternoon.

Your backup plan shouldn't feel like the consolation prize. It should feel like another beautiful way your wedding could happen.

5. Think About Your Guests Before They Ever Walk Through the Door

Parking will probably never make your wedding Pinterest board.

But your guests will absolutely notice it.

Where will everyone park?

How far will they walk?

What happens when Grandma arrives?

What about someone with mobility concerns? Your pregnant cousin? Your aunt who absolutely wore the heels even though everyone told her not to? 😂

Is there lighting after dark? If parking is farther from the venue, is transportation available?

Accessibility and parking are among the practical details WeddingWire recommends considering when choosing a wedding venue, and I think they're easy to overlook because they aren't the exciting parts of wedding planning.

But here's the thing about the little details: When they're handled well, your guests never have to think about them.

They simply arrive, feel welcomed, and start celebrating with you. That's the point.

6. Look Beyond the Reception Room

When you tour, don't just stand in the middle of the reception space and look around. Walk the property.

Where will you get ready?

Where will your partner get ready?

Where will your photographer take pictures?

Where will your wedding party hang out before the ceremony?

Where will your guests go between the ceremony and reception?

Where will your caterer work?

Where are the bathrooms?

Where can Grandpa sit down for a few minutes when he needs a break?

A wedding isn't one room for six hours.

It's getting ready with your favorite people. It's your photographer sneaking you and your new spouse outside when the light is perfect. It's your dad seeing you dressed for the first time. It's your friends laughing during cocktail hour. It's finding a quiet corner together for thirty seconds because you suddenly realize, Holy crap, we're married.

Those are the moments you're choosing a venue for.

It's an entire day happening in lots of little moments and spaces. Walk them. Then picture your people in them.

7. Decide How Much Freedom You Want

Every venue approaches vendors a little differently.

Some venues offer a carefully curated or all-inclusive experience where many of those decisions are already made for you. Others give couples more freedom to build their own vendor team.

Both can create absolutely beautiful weddings.

The question is: Which experience feels right for you?

Maybe the idea of having everything bundled together sounds like heaven.

Or maybe you've been following a photographer for three years and already know she's taking your wedding photos. Maybe there's a caterer you love. Maybe your groom has already informed you there is exactly one acceptable DJ. 😂 Maybe you simply want more control over where different pieces of your wedding budget go.

Ask about caterers, bartenders, photographers, DJs, florists, planners, and any preferred or required vendor lists before you book.

And while you're talking about vendors, ask about the practical side too. Is there a dedicated space for the caterer? Where do vendors load in? What equipment is available?

Are vendors required to carry liability insurance?

The right amount of freedom is the amount that lets the two of you create your wedding without adding stress you don't want.

8. Know Who Will Be in Your Corner

You're choosing more than a beautiful space.

You're also choosing people you'll likely communicate with for months, and sometimes more than a year, leading up to one very important day.

Who answers your questions after you book?

Who communicates with your vendors?

Who represents the venue on your wedding day?

Do you know how to reach them?

And, maybe most importantly, do you feel comfortable asking them questions?

Zola recommends paying attention to your relationship with the venue coordinator because good communication throughout the process can give couples greater confidence heading into their wedding.

We agree.

You don't need your venue manager to become your new best friend.

But you should feel heard. You should understand what comes next. You should feel comfortable asking the question that feels silly to you but really isn't.

And when your wedding day finally arrives, you should be able to focus on getting married, not wondering whether someone remembered what was supposed to happen.

9. Read the Contract

I know. Super romantic. 😂

Read it anyway.

We're with the wedding experts at Brides on this one. They recommend carefully reviewing the venue contract before committing, and we completely agree.

Understand your payment schedule. Cancellation and rescheduling policies. Access times. What's included. What's handled separately. Vendor requirements. Insurance requirements. Cleanup expectations. And any additional costs that could apply to your wedding.

Then ask questions.

If you don't understand something, ask what it means.

If something you've discussed isn't reflected in the contract, ask about it.

This isn't about looking for something to go wrong. It's about making sure everyone is on the same page before your wedding day arrives.

A good contract gives both you and the venue clear expectations so everyone can focus on making the day go right.

10. Finally, Go See It

Photos can get a venue onto your list.

A tour is what tells you whether it belongs in your wedding story.

Stand where you might say your vows.

Walk into the reception space.

Look out the windows.

Explore the property.

Picture your parents there. Your friends. Your wedding party.

Imagine the tables filled. The music playing. Everyone you love gathered together in one place.

And pay attention to how you feel while you're standing there.

Because after all the comparisons, prices, capacities, contracts, and checklists, choosing a wedding venue isn't just about finding somewhere beautiful.

It's about finding somewhere that feels like yours.

And what makes a place feel like yours will be different for every couple.

Maybe it's a huge dance floor filled with everyone you know. Maybe it's an outdoor ceremony surrounded by the people you love. Maybe it's having the freedom to choose the vendors who understand your vision. Maybe it's knowing Dad has a comfortable place to sit after he's spent the afternoon proudly making the rounds and talking to absolutely everyone. 😂

Whatever your why is, find the place that brings it to life.

And if you walk around Barn 1800 and start picturing your people here?

Well...that's when it gets really fun.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it can't recreate the feeling of standing in the place where you might say “I do.”

That's why we believe every wedding story begins with a tour.

Take a walk. Picture your people. Imagine your forever.

Come see where your story could begin.
